  1. The French took over Vietnam in order to gain power as a European nation. They exploited their resources and treated the Vietnamese people harshly. This built nationalism between the Vietnamese people and this nationalism was hatred toward the french. Eventually, the french withdrew from pressure all over. Then, there was a Final Declaration of the Geneva Conference on July 21, 1954. This conference included Cambodia, People's Republic of China, France, Laos, the UK, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and North Vietnamese. The U.S. was able to support the Southern portion of Vietnam by making them an anticommunist state (South Vietnam). In the end, the U.S. also helped separate South Vietnam from the North in terms of nationwide elections.

  2. Many events influenced the intervention of the US in Indochina and also influence the withdraw of France from Indochina. A major influence for the intervention of the US was the Cold War. The Cold War created a state in the United States where if you were labeled as communism it meant that you were an enemy of the US and the world. This in turn influence the support of the US in French rule within Indochina and was the cause of billions of US dollars being funded to the French. This began the long journey of involvement for the US in Indochina. On the other hand , while US was intervening in the affairs of Indochina the driving force of the withdraw of the French was being raised. Nationalism arose in Vietnam through the pure hate of the unjust treatment and exploitation of the resources of the land which resulted in the rising nationalism which ultimately allowed for the departure of French rule in Indochina.

  3. The first global event that contributed to French withdrawal, was in 1904. In 1904, Vietnamese were encouraged and inspired by Japan's defeat of Russia. The next two global events that furthered encouragement for the Vietnamese was the Koumingtang Revolution in China in 1911 against the British, and the Russian Revolution in 1917. These events gave the Vietnamese people enough encouragement to start the Indochinese communist party in 1930, and also the Vietnamese Nationalist party in 1927. These revolutionary organizations symbolized and raised awareness to the Vietnamese people. World War 2 symbolized an extreme movement for Vietnamese people. During World War 2, communists and nationalists worked to build underground intelligence in hope to gain independence back. When the Japan were defeated in World War 2, the Vietnamese people began to slowly gain independence over all of Viet Nam, this is discluding the major cities that were still under french control. Negotiations were set up to be made with British, however in 1947 British remained independent. Vietnamese people finally decided to fight French for independence over Viet Nam. In 1949, after lots of violence between the two groups, french recognized the state of Viet Nam as being idependent under former Vietnamese control (emperor Bao Dai). In 1950, U.S officials finally recognized Bao Dai's government. United Nations officially came into the equation in 1954 when they declared VIetnamese to gain independence of Viet Nam.

  4. The French withdrew from Indochina because of threats from Cambodia and the Viet Minh, along with the pressure from Vietnamese nationalists. Also, America became involved because of French request for help, but America did not appreciate France's motives. When France took control over Indochina, the exploitation and poverty of the Vietnamese created a nationalism similar to that of African countries and India when ruled by the mother countries. The Viet Minh fought against the French by destroying ports and fighting against the military. Also, Cambodia threatened to turn to guerrilla movements to fight against France. France asked America for help from its fleet, but America declined the offer since it was against France's motives. Therefore, America helped at the Geneva Conference to try and restore peace in Vietnam.

  5. Many events contributed to the French withdraw and U.S. intervention in Indonesia. One of the main events that took place to the U.S. intervention was the Cold War. Secondly, the threats from Viet Minh and Cambodia came. Among these groups were Vietnamese nationalists. These nationalists arose because they did not like the inhuman treatment. Also, they did not like that the exploitation of the land resources were being taken advantage of.

  6. The guerrilla attacks against the French is what ultimately drove the French out of Indochina. These guerrilla attacks were operated Vietnamese groups who wanted the French to leave. The French exhausted their resources and impoverished the people of Vietnam, along with taking political power away from any Vietnamese people. This created nationalism amongst the Vietnamese against the French, and a basis to start forming guerrilla warfare groups. Once the French lost military battles and decided to surrender, the Vietnamese had control again. This was during the Cold War Era. China and Russia, two communist countries, started to send aid to Vietnam and woo them over to the communist side. The United States did not want another enemy formed so they started to give aid in an effort to woo them over to democracy. After split decisions from the shared support of different nations, the South felt more democratic and the north felt more communist. Instead of holding a vote to see who would be he ruler and therefore what kind of country Vietnam would become, the united States started a proxy war to make sure they had a democratic ally. All of this happened because of the cold war. you either aligned with Russia or the U.S during this time, and the North aligned with Russia while the South aligned with the U.S.

  7. The Dien Bien Phu conflict is what led to the French withdrawal from this region. During the Cold War the United States sent advisers to Southeast Asia to prevent communism in the area, eventually the U.S. started to send soldiers to Southeast Asia which precipitated into U.S. involvement in the region. The Cambodian government is only there due to the United States involvement in Cambodia during the sideshow conflicts that occurred in Cambodia while the Vietnam War was happening.
