"Google Translate Will Let You Read Signs, in Real Time, With Your Phone Camera"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2015/01/14/google-translate-will-let-you-read-signs-in-real-time-with-your-phone-camera/
The second flattener discussed the "internet-email-browser phase". This phase came about when Netscape was publicized on 8/9. Netscape was a small company that introduced browsers. Now in modern day an example of a browser is Google Chrome. Google is a very big company that came out with a new invention that will continue to flatten the world. The invention is an addition to their app in which you can now point your camera to a sign and it will translate it to whatever language desired. This app is a flattener because it brings people closer together. If one person is trying to ask for directions but he or she speaks a different language they can simply open this app and guide themselves around town. This app also allows for the average person to broaden their knowledge of languages from around the world. Once people learn little by little, new information about different countries, they are more connected to the world as a whole.
"Everybody wants to rule the world"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21635077-online-businesses-can-grow-very-large-very-fastit-what-makes-them-exciting-does-it-also-make
Back on 8/9/95, because of a small company called Netscape, the world is now like it is today. Netscape brought internet browsers and helped introduce email. Now, in this current era of the computer age, Google has started to rule the internet world. Google is taking over so fast that it actually is becoming a concern for their competitors. Netscape turned the world into a internet based civilization and now Google is enhancing what they started with. Google now has their own browser which in some people's opinion is the best one out there. Netscape made it easier to do things on the internet, and now Google is improving on that as well. A person can do anything from write a story, to do emails, to making a graph sheet, and much more. Google is sort of like the Netscape of the new world.
"Microsoft headset to help people navigate the city"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.com/news/technology-29913637
The second flattener talked about the phase in which everyone was introduced and overwhelmed by the activities done on the internet. The company Netscape went public on 8/9. The company offered new browsers. Companies such as Microsoft, recently developed the new headset to help blind people navigate themselves. This new technology would connect to the phone, and using the location services, the headset will guide you around. With the development of this technology, people with disabilities, such as blindness can still roam the cities and outdoors.
"Tweeting Ferguson: how social media can (and cannot) facilitate protest"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/monkey-cage/wp/2014/11/25/tweeting-ferguson-how-social-media-can-and-can-not-facilitate-protest/
The second flattener was the day Netscape went public. Friedman states “the more people had the browser, the more people would want to be interconnected, and the more incentive there would be to create content and applications and tools.” Netscape allowed for twitter to become such a large application accessible to almost anyone. With such a large social media with millions of people on it daily it helps spread awareness of events happening in the world and allows people to interconnect with one another. An event that made this apparent was Ferguson twitter and other social medias allowed people to post information about the planned and actual location of protests. Social media also gave outsiders a look into the event through pictures posted.
"Sir Tim Berners-Lee: World wide web needs bill of rights" http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-26540635
ReplyDeleteThe second flattener Friedman talked about was called, 8/9/95. He talked about how the Netscape was a huge flattening force. Netscape allowed people to use the World Wide Web and helped get the advances for large applications become accessible. In this article, I was able to find out more about the World Wide Web. It talks about the invented of the World Wide Web wants to have bill of rights protecting its users. The inventor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee questions people if they want the government to be able to do more survalience on its users. He says that the World Wide Web should have protection and Riggs just as human rights. In addition, he believe that the World Wide Web has benefitted so many people in the last 25 years, and cannot stand when people say most things on the Internet is garbage.
“Language Translation Tech Starts to Deliver on Its Promise”
ReplyDeletehttp://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/11/language-translation-tech-starting-to-deliver-on-its-promise/
In Friedman’s second flattener, he discusses the World Wide Web and when Netscape went public in 8/9/95. Throughout this section, he talks about how the Apple-PC-Windows flattening phase has been a huge contributor to the flattening of the world. Friedman says “the Apple-PC-Windows phase begat the Netscape browsing-email phase, and the two together enabled more people to communicate and interact with more other people anywhere on the planet than ever before.” Netscape allowed people all over the world to access and use the World Wide Web. One month ago, Skype initiated a translation system for English and Spanish speakers. In the near future, Google Translate will also be updating to have a better translation system. It now has ninety different languages and you can hear the translated words spoken in that language and in your own.
"Microsoft Looks to Windows 10 for a Jolt in the Mobile Realm"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/19/technology/microsoft-looks-to-windows-10-for-a-jolt-in-the-mobile-realm.html?_r=0
Friedman claims that the second flattener was when Netscape came to be on 8/9/95. Netscape brought people together on the internet and was a huge innovation and breakthrough into the modern world. This article describes the new Windows 10 application that Microsoft is coming out with. Microsoft claims that this could cause "jolt" in the mobile nation and it is a very large project. Not many people were paying attention to Microsoft products, so they decided to make the new Windows 10. This could be a large advancement in technology and the internet and could bring more people together like Netscape did.
Where the Web was Born
ReplyDeletehttp://digitalnomad.nationalgeographic.com/2012/06/21/where-the-web-was-born/
The second flattener has to do with the world wide web. Friedman says that a British computer scientist named Tim Berners Lee came up with the idea of the world wide web. He also says that the web became very powerful and popular around the world. The article that I found strengthens his argument. The article explains how Tim came up with the idea, how the world wide web affects life, and how the web affects how people get information
When the web went around and Netscape became public. This is the second world flattener that Friedman goes into great depth to discuss. He states that Apple Pc , Windows phase started the Netscape browsing email phase and together the revolutionized the way people could connect and interact with each other. Friedman discusses how once it started that one man could only work within a limited network then the introduction of email browsing which helped connect and get the foot through the door and then the magic were to happen as this was just the foundation. The article Buisness: Where angels will trend relates to the topic of netscape and being able to supply the people with more ways of connecting and that thrive and hunger to connect to each other as humans. It states that many more companies are starting to realize the growing trend of connecting in better and new ways , and have been creating innovations to products to fit the every growing need to connect.

ReplyDelete"France:Fiber Optic Plans for Paris" Author: Thomas Crampton
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/12/business/12fobriefs-005.html?adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1421985664-aTbYKZD4503Wnt7mUuCBKw
In this article it talks about the plans the company Iliad has for building a massive fiber optic network. It is estimated that the cost will be around 1 billion euros. They want to create this network to make communication more affordable for their company. They also say that if they have any extra space they will allow other companies to lease the extra space. This relates to the second flattener because Friedman talked about the bubble. More space is needed for communication and this company is willing to pay a lot for it. This is what we saw when Friedman explained that everyone started selling fiber optics because companies needed more space. Companies need more space and capacity to grow and this article shows that. This might also create more competition if they start leasing the extra capacity to competitors.
