"Snapple Deal To Outsource May Add Jobs In America"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/01/business/global/01outsource.html?_r=0
In flattener #5, Friedman explains how outsourcing in India creates more jobs and opportunities for Indians that may not have many opportunities in their own country. This article talks about how Snapple, a popular American iced-tea brand, is beginning outsourcing with HCL Technologies in Noida, India. The article explains that this outsourcing deal will bring more jobs not only to Indians, but also to Americans. HCL is planning to also hire Americans to do some of the work, as well as Indians. Overall, this article is supporting Friedman's argument about how outsourcing helps create more jobs in more countries, such as India and America, therefore flattening the world.

ReplyDeleteHinchingbrooke Hospital and the future for outsourcing
Chris Cook
This article discusses the use of outsourcing at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Outsourcing is when companies upload and collaborate on projects. The Hinchingbrooke Healthcare Services (NHS) is considering teaming up with a small hospital in Cambridgeshire because of the fact that the NHS is financially struggling and is at risk of going out of business. It is believed that this is because the original contract, which allows for the hospital to stay open, was considered “undeliverable”. As of January ninth, NHS is trying to develop a new contract instead of outsourcing. However, the likelihood that the NHS is going to outsource is increasing. The Hinchingbrooke Hospital board of directors is that outsourcing will give it bad publicity. All in all, Friedman’s opinion on outsourcing relates to this article.
"Uber to Introduce Driver Background Checks in India"
ReplyDeletehttp://bits.blogs.nytimes.com///?module=ArrowsNav&contentCollection=Technology&action=keypress®ion=FixedLeft&pgtype=Blogs
This articles focuses on the new app designed for convenient car rides, the app is called Uber. Though, India faced a difficulty with this app, a girl was raped by the Uber driver. India now has stated that they will make it mandatory that Uber provides a background check of their drivers. This article relates to the fifth flattener, "Outsourcing" because Uber is a relatively new app and India is using it. This shows how India is still on the same playing as the U.S.. India continues to rise in the field of technology and this app is just another element that is flattening the world. Once India finds a problem with technology, they fix it, they want to continue to improve their place in technology.
"Npower to cut 1,400 UK jobs in outsourcing to India"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/nov/27/npower-cuts-1400-jobs-outsourcing-india
Friedman's fifth flattener is outsourcing, which is when a company sends jobs to less developed countries in order to obtain the service it desires at a cheaper cost. This article discusses the outsourcing of jobs in a call center, as well as offshoring jobs, from the UK to India. This type of strategy is understood by Friedman, because it can save the company a large amount of money, and provide jobs to people in eastern countries who are willing to work for less. However, the article states that not everyone agrees in this situation; obviously because of the hundreds of jobs that will be lost, but also because of the company's reputation. It explains that if they move their call center to India, their reputation will deteriorate their already tarnish review of customer service. Apparently, people are complaining to the company, saying that the move is about the cost, and not about the customers. After reading the fifth flattener I can understand why a company would want to outsource to another country, and I can also understand how it is devastating to the people who are losing their jobs to cheaper labor somewhere else.
"United Airlines Considers Outsourcing Jobs at 28 U.S. Airports"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2015/01/12/business/12reuters-ual-outsourcing.html
The fifth flattener that Friedman talks about in "The World is Flat" is outsourcing. Friedman explains that many companies elect to participate in outsourcing because it is cheap. Outsourcing also provides jobs for people in foreign countries. This article is about how United Airlines is planning to outsource and they are assessing what the effects would be if they elected to. The main reason United Airlines would do it is that it would probably save the company a lot of money. If United Airlines switched to outsourcing, it would affect a projected 2000 workers. This is a specific example of how the world is being flattened by outsourcing.

ReplyDeleteNavy Looks to Private Contractors for More Sub Maintenance
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/01/12/us/ap-us-submarine-maintenance-delays.html
Friedman's fifth flattener, outsourcing, is when companies use workers in other countries to do the work for them more efficiently and for cheaper wages. In the article I found it says that the U.S. Navy is considered outsourcing for submarine repair jobs. They are considering this because the four Naval shipyards in the U.S. are completely understaffed due to Pentagon budget cuts. The pentagon also put into effect a civilian hiring freeze which got lifted in 2013 but the shipyards aren't expected to be fully staffed until 2016. They are planning on outsourcing repair work to private shipyards because it is more efficient and it should get submarines back out at sea. This article supports Friedman's belief that outsourcing is a flattener. It shows how a company like the Navy would be able to recover from a shortness of staff and get back on the playing field.
U.S. H1-B visa program may help companies outsource, offshore jobs
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pri.org/stories/2012-07-18/us-h1-b-visa-program-may-help-companies-outsource-offshore-jobs
The fifth flattener that Friedman talks about is outsourcing. Outsourcing is when companies send work over to different countries for cheaper labor. The article that I found talks about different outsourcing jobs, much like the jobs in India that Friedman talks about. The article further explains what India did to lower their work prices, and get the job done. The article also talks about the H1-B visa that one needs to get to be able to ship things back and forth to the outsourcing countries.
"Small Businesses, Joining a Parade of Outsourcing"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/16/business/small-business-joining-a-parade-of-outsourcing.html?_r=0
Friedman says that the fifth flattener is outsourcing, which is using workers in foreign countries for cheaper labor. The article that I found explains how even small businesses are using outsourcing to their advantage. It says that it mostly happens when a high-income country uses a low-income country, because the people there will do the same work for less money. Even though these poor people are not getting paid much for this work, they may earn much higher than the local minimum wage, so they will take the work with no hesitation. In essence, this article showed me how outsourcing creates many jobs around the world, which levels the playing field.
Outsourcing - the process by which one nations company enlists services of another country to do the same job that is offered in the host country but for a cheaper price. Friedman discusses the topic of outsourcing as the 5th world flattener. He says that a boom in India was a cause in the supercharge of globalization. He discusses that outsourcing help India receive another independence day as it allowed India's ability to collaborate with western countries and gave more Indians freedom of how , for who and where they worked. The article India Faces Battle for Outsourcing , truly shed light on the benefits that helped India when it boomed for outsourcing. this article relates to the topic of outsourcing because it shows the benefits that outsourcing did for the economy and the power of the individual in India.

"European Countries Turn to Chinese Investors" Author: Jack Ewing
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/21/business/international/european-companies-turn-to-chinese-investors.html
This article talks about a German company that produces heavy construction equipment has gone under. They had to lay off many employees in order to stay in business but in the end they had to sell the company to a Chinese investor. This relates to Friedman's argument that more companies are turning to Chinese investors because its cheap. The article goes on to say that the German owners like the Chinese investor because they still feel like they are in control. This is exactly what Friedman was talking about when he said more and more companies are looking to China to do business because they are cheap and they create more competition. Now that the Chinese have invested in the German company Putzmeister, they will be able to compete with the other companies.
