  1. The water and security of Central Asia has been going down rapidly ever since the end of Soviet rule. Because of the upstream countries in Central Asia, the downstream countries dont have control over the water. One example are the dams that Kyrgyzstan owns on the Naryn River. They generate electricity which the downstream countries covet. Also the economy is hurting from the water problem as well. Cotton is a large cash crop in Central Asia but because of the poor irrigation and water shortage it has hurt the industry. The Aral sea has seen a massive drop in water within the past ten years. Because of this the fishing industry has also gone down and many men are left without work. Another problem is safety of water and quantity. Many people say that during the Soviet rule the water taps were managed better. Some reports from Tajikistan say that 2-3 hours a day can be spent just gathering enough water to drink. Unfortunetly because of the fall of the Soviet Union people are having a hard time finding enough water and safe water. This is because the water systems are outdated. It is estimated that 50-80 percent of water used in agriculture is lost. Also for the cash crops the pestitsides being used are harmful. It is clear that water systems in Central Asia need to be modernized to meet the needs of the people.
